POHZ - CROATIAN SCIENTISTS PORTAL
Croatian Scientists Portal is a project of National and University Library under auspices of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia and in cooperation with the University of Zagreb. In the project participate Ministry of Science, Education and Sports, Croatian Heritage Foundation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia.
Croatian scientific diaspora is large but unfortunately, so far never systematically monitored and without an overall insight into this enormous and for Croatia certainly, a very significant potential.
The project was initiated over a decade ago but only now gained the attention which it deserves. Croatian scientists, that is, scientists of Croatian origin, are eminent members of numerous academic communities all over the world. Many of them have achieved remarkable results and gained outstanding recognition and are prepared to share their knowledge and expertise. Some of them have been for years in individual contacts with scientists in Croatia while contacts on institutional level are rather scarce, although and despite the fact that in some countries there are societies of former students (Almae Matris). However, most of them are members of universities and institutions all over the world. Therefore, only systematic collection of data about each and every scientist, regardless of the way and means of getting information, whether through scientific literature, diplomatic offices, various societies, individual contacts and other forms of acquiring information, may create a solid foundation for a network of Croatian scientists from mother country and abroad.
Internet is a means of connecting the world on the whole. Scientific cooperation was always based on communication between national scientific and research environments and the development of communication potentials today enables this communication more than ever before. But, huge number of data, its distribution, various formats for their storage and its datedness, make their search and use more difficult. Also, it is very difficult to present interdisciplinary projects. The need for more transparent data display requires adequate organization of data in order to be user friendly.
Therefore, initiating this project is of strategic importance for national interest because it relates to scientists as the most representative part of society and their activities should be systematically built into scientific, economic, cultural, communication and other activities in our society.
In the same way the project is important for the National and University Library and its dual function. From the national function point, it is important and essential for the Library in developing its national collection Croatica, while through its university function, the Library acts as a mediator in communication of scientific and research environments and their correlation to the world as a whole.
By its structure, Portal integrates human, communication, computer and information resources. In doing so, it was necessary, on one side, to make an effort to prevent the abuse of data on Croatian Scientists Portal and, on the other, to find the best way of promoting its appropriate use.
The general goal is to create:
- a focal point for the information about individuals and their activities,
- to increase access and quality of data,
- to enable direct connection to international and other projects,
- to promote scientists with the aim of their involvement in economics and other needs of our country,
- to popularize science, scientific research and scientists and promote ethical values of science,
- to provide information by multi-language data display (Croatian and English).
Project is designed as a long-term engagement, and its full operationalization is expected in the period of three years.
The input of data into database is done by individuals engaged in the implementation of the project, but it is also possible for scientists themselves to update information with precautions taken regarding protection from unauthorized access
