DNA repair and DNA damage signaling

Deficiency in mismatch repair is linked with a common cancer predisposition syndrome, hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer (HNPCC). Postreplicative mismatch repair (MMR) is responsible for the correction of DNA polymerase errors, introduced into genomic DNA during replication.
Intimate knowledge of the molecular mechanisms involved in the correction of mismatches might provide us with an invaluable insight not only into the genesis of cancer, but also into the reasons underlying resistance to cancer chemotherapy. In addition to DNA mismatch correction, MMR proteins are also implicated in the processing of certain types of DNA damage.
